Automated Demand Response
Why ADR?
Automated Demand Response (ADR) programs help utilities maintain grid reliability and enable customers to realize significant value. OpenADR was created to standardize and automate DR communication signals from utilities to manage the growing energy demand.
ADR is a tool that allows end-use electric customers to shape, shed, shift or shimmy their electricity usage in response to market conditions. DR signals are sent based on price signals, financial incentives, wholesale prices, environmental conditions or grid reliability issues. Demand response can save money by lowering peak time energy usage, when rates are higher. Demand response may also prevent rolling blackouts by offsetting the need for more electricity generation and supports a sustainable grid.
Here’s How It Works
When a demand response event occurs, a central system sends an event or price signal through the internet, directly to your automated control system (energy management system). Your automated load reduction strategy is then applied throughout your facility. You’ll have the option to override ADR signals as needed or revise your program strategy. You may qualify for incentives to offset the purchase and installation costs of technology and equipment that enables ADR.
